We support orgs that build grassroots power to hold elected officials accountable.
We have to make sure that we have elected officials who will champion the legislation and policies that we produce.
Darius Gordon
Executive Director at Met Council Action
In New York City, our member organizations Met Council Action and CAAAV Voice have played a huge role in building the multi-racial working class tenant bloc that made it viable for Mayor Mamdani to run a campaign that included a rent freeze as a key policy promise. And because his election was fueled by grassroots power, not corporate money, he has stayed accountable to working people - most recently supporting the passage of a historic 2-year rent freeze.
When we’re trying to pass bold policy solutions that can truly change our people’s lives, who we elect matters.
Carmen Medrano
Executive Director at United for a New Economy Action
Last year a committee of members with UNE Action endorsed a slate of housing champions in the city of Westminster. They all won their elections. Since then, tenants have been working with the pro-renter majority on the City Council to improve the rental inspection code and hold landlords accountable in their city.
